Recently, we’ve been hearing more and more about people adding olive oil to their morning coffee. Dax Shepard has even spoken about his olive oil routine on his podcast, Armchair Expert, and the trend has become so popular that Starbucks is now offering coffee with a shot of olive oil.
We’re big advocates of getting your daily dose of olive oil to enjoy its many health benefits. After all, even the ancient Greeks referred to extra virgin olive oil as the “elixir of youth and health.” With its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, they weren’t wrong.
But… olive oil in coffee? Think of it as bulletproof coffee, but with all of the good fats and none of the bad ones.
We had to try it for ourselves.
Because extra virgin olive oil is considered a “good fat,” it can slow the absorption of nutrients — in this case, caffeine — allowing it to enter your bloodstream more gradually and prolong its effects. For those who drink multiple cups a day, this could mean needing less coffee overall. It may also help with appetite management by supporting more stable blood sugar levels.
Adding a healthy fat like olive oil can also help soften the acidity of coffee, potentially reducing some of its harsher effects, such as irritation or digestive discomfort. Unlike saturated fats like butter or coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil is rich in unsaturated fats, which are widely considered the healthiest dietary fats.
And perhaps most importantly, starting your morning with a little EVOO means you’ve already made a good choice — getting your daily dose of liquid gold from the very first sip.
Just one tablespoon in your morning coffee is enough. If mixing it directly into your coffee isn’t for you, you can still enjoy the benefits by taking a spoonful alongside your usual breakfast.
Pro tip: after adding olive oil to your coffee, sprinkle in a bit of cinnamon to enhance both the flavor and the antioxidant benefits.
