There’s a certain kind of sadness that creeps in toward the end of a vacation. It’s not just about leaving behind the beautiful views or the long, unhurried days—it’s about knowing that this pace of life, this feeling of deep rest and presence, is something I don’t often allow myself in everyday life.
I've spent the last few weeks on the Costa Blanca in Calpe, Spain. This has been the most laid-back trip I’ve ever taken. No checklists of places to see, no schedule to follow—just quiet mornings, meals that stretch into the afternoon, and days spent listening to the waves with no real agenda. On this vacation, the simplest moments feel like everything. It’s been a reminder that time expands when you let it. That rest isn’t just about taking a break from work, but about fully sinking into the present moment.
And while I know I can’t bring the sea air home with me, I don’t want to leave behind this feeling of slowness and ease. So, I’m thinking about the little rituals I can incorporate into daily life—things that remind me to pause, even for just a moment, and let a piece of vacation seep into the everyday.
So here are some practices I will be taking home with me to make every day feel like vacation, even once I've returned to the real world...
✨ SAVORING MY MORNING COFFEE
Not rushing through it while answering emails or scrolling on my phone, but actually sitting with it, watching the world outside my window, letting that first sip be a moment of stillness.
✨ ROMANTICIZING DINNER TIME
On vacation, cooking (or even just preparing a simple snack) feels different—it’s unhurried, often done with a view, and always paired with a sense of pleasure. At home, I might not have the sea breeze drifting through my kitchen, but I can set the scene: a glass of wine, music playing, good ingredients laid out with care. Instead of seeing cooking as just another task, I want to turn it into a moment that feels transportive—one that brings me back to that slow, joyful way of being.
✨ READING A BOOK --- WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS
I always read more on vacation. It’s the one time my mind feels truly quiet, when I can lose myself in a story without checking my phone or feeling like I should be doing something else. Why do I save that for vacation? I want to make time, even just 20 minutes a day, to let my mind slow down and get lost in a book.
✨ CREATING SPACE FOR NOTHING
On vacation, I don’t feel the need to fill every moment. Some of my favorite memories from this trip have been the simplest—sitting on the terrace, watching the waves, letting my mind wander. At home, I want to resist the urge to fill every free moment with a task, and instead let there be space to just be.
I know that real life is different from vacation. There are responsibilities, routines, things that need to get done. But maybe, if I’m intentional, I can find ways to stretch time just a little—to make space for small, beautiful moments that remind me to slow down.
Because life isn’t just about the vacations—it’s about making the everyday feel just a little more magical.
