Things I Ate & Drank and Loved in September

If you are what you eat, then I'm a mixture of pizza, caffeine and cocktails. Here's a list of things I've been eating, drinking and loving in Florence, Italy this September.

  • Carbonara Pizza from Pizzeria Giovanni Santarpia

This Neapolitan-style pizzeria has become super famous in Florence and now I understand why. The crust was the perfect ratio of doughy/crispy and had tons of flavor and the menu options offered everything from the traditional to the unusual, like this Carbonara pizza - my favorite pasta dish and now apparently my favorite pizza too.

  • Gin Basil Smash at I Macci

When I plan on meeting friends for a drink, chances are I will suggest we go to I Macci. The cocktails are great and the atmosphere, whether you are inside or out in the piazza is friendly and inviting. This bar is all around one of my favorite local spots in Florence.
Largo Pietro Annigoni, 3, 50122 Firenze

  • Honey and Lavender Gelato from Gelateria Edoardo

Usually I'd stay clear of any establishments in Piazza del Duomo as they tend to be pretty touristy. However even I can't resist the smell of freshly made cones that waft through the piazza as you walk by. I tend to get the lemon gelato when I'm here but decided to try out something a little funkier this time and I wasn't disappointed.

  • Tequila cocktail at Locale

Locale has been named one of the best bars in the world and it lives up to the hype. You really can't go wrong with whatever amazing cocktail you order and they tend to change them out frequently depending on what house-made spirits they have on hand. Oh, and did I mention it dates back to the 13th century?

  • Salted caramel chocolate cake from Il Santo Bevitore

I usually skip dessert. I don't when this is on the menu!
Via Santo Spirito, 64r, 50125 Firenze

  • Truffle pasta from Il Nugolo

I try to mix it up and not always put something from il Nugolo on this list each month, but I really just can't help myself. It's my favorite spot in Florence when I'm craving Italian food but don't want the same old dishes and it's always the first place I take out-of-town friends to impress them in Florence.
Via della Mattonaia, 27 R, 50121 Firenze

  • Aperitivo at Villa Machiavelli

Clearly never going to turn down a chance to have a drink at Machiavelli's house! This really was Machiavelli's residence in Florence and you can find it just a short drive from the city. The outdoor bar is surrounded by vineyards and they turned the barn into an ivy-covered bar. Dreamy views and vibes for a spritz!
